Dental Implants require a certain amount of bone tissue around it to heal properly and be firmly supported and anchored in place. In some cases, where the patient is lacking jawbone volume, a bone graft has to be performed before the implant can be placed. Bone graft surgery involves the placement of bone, or bone-like material to the area that’s lacking tissue. There are different types of bone that can be used for grafting:

• Autograft: bone used from patient’s own body
• Allogrft: bone from a genetically similar organism
• Xenograft: bone from a genetically dissimilar organism
• Synthetic: a synthetic biocompatible material

Generally speaking, bone grafting is a minor dental surgery that only takes minutes (occasionally, in severe cases it may take up to an hour) and patients can resume their daily activities right after it.
